How to Bake Cherry Bars

  • 1 1/4 cups butter, softened
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/3 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 1 (26 1/4 ounce) can cherry pie filling (2 if you like cherries)
  • Glaze
  • 1 1/4 cups powdered sugar
  • 5/8 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 5/8 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons milk


Cream together butter and sugar. Add eggs and beat well. Beat in extracts. In a separate bowl combine flour and salt. Add to the creamed mixture. Mix until combined.Spread 3 cups batter into a greased 15x10x1-in baking pan (Also works with 9×13 – baking time will be at least 35 minutes). Spread with pie filling. Drop the remaining batter by teaspoonfuls over pie filling. Bake at 350 for 30 to 35 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool on wire rack. Combine glaze ingredients, and drizzle over cooled bars.
